IRS "No Phishing Here"

Fraudulent e-mails appearing to look like they are from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) are finding their way into taxpaper mailboxes with messages regarding an audit of offering access to a refund.  The IRS does not send out unsolicited e-mails, nor does it ask for detailed personal information, such as Social Security number, credit card information, PINs, or passwords.  If you have received an e-mail which claims to come from the IRS please forward it to phishing@irs.gov.

Below are a few things to watch for in suspicious e-mails:

  • An authentic-looking privacy policy that says "Internal Revenue Code Section 6109 allows us to request your Social Security number."
  • A strange-looking URL at the top of the page, such as tzk.kozle.pl.
  • A directive in the e-mail message telling you to click on a link that looks similar to the official IRS.gov Web page.
  • A subject line that reads, "IRS Notification - Please Read This."
  • Any e-mail request that asks for your checking account number.

Internet/E-Mail Fraud Alert

Recently, there have been multiple e-mail fraud attempts, known as "Phishing, that were initiated via e-mail sent to both the general public and to some credit union members that appeared to be from NCUA. This false e-mail asked for the recipient to click on a link to verify their credit union account registration. If the recipient proceeded to do so, the link directed them to a false website and asked for their credit union account number and PIN, along with other personal information.

NCUA does not ask credit unions members for such personal information. Anyone who receives an e-mail that purports to be from NCUA and asks for account information should consider it to be a fraudulent attempt to obtain their personal account data for an illegal purpose and should not follow the instructions in the e-mail.

If you responded to such an e-mail and provided any confidential account information, please notify your credit union immediately of the scheme. You should also change your accounts PIN, and take any additional action recommended by your credit union to protect your account.

Formal complaints can be filed with http://www.IC3.gov

E-Mail Alert -

You will never be asked for personal, account or password information from A-K Valley FCU via e-mail.  If you ever receive a request for such information through an e-mail that appears from us, do not respond, but please call us at 724-335-2274.
